Mention 'bacon sandwich' and most people automatically think of the BLT (those more stalwart bacon fans out there will probably think of multi-pound bacon sandwiches); but as delicious as a BLT is, it isn't the only way to incorporate bacon into a sandwich. For your eating pleasure we present the Peanut Butter, Bacon, and Jelly sandwich and the Bacon Butter and Jelly sandwich. Peanut Butter, Bacon, and Jelly: The peanut butter and jelly sandwich is a favorite in the United States. It consists of a layer of peanut butter and a layer of spread (jam, jelly, preserves) between two slices of bread. There have been few innovations in the land of PB&J over the years, but here at ABR we've got one that we're sure will catch on - adding bacon. You start out with the basic steps of making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Take two pieces of bread, spread jelly on one and peanut butter on the other. Now here is where things get different. Next, instead of putting the two pieces of bread together and being finished, you add bacon. And don't be stingy with it, it is bacon after all so more is better. The smoky-ness of the bacon goes quite well with the peanut butter, and the jelly adds just the right hint of fruit to the mix. At first it is a bit confusing to eat - normally PB&J is a somewhat sweet sandwich, but with the enhancement of bacon the added saltiness drives it more towards being savoury. The only downside of the whole sandwich is that by adding strips of bacon you now have to work a little harder to get a bite; using chopped bacon would be less aesthetically pleasing, but much easier to eat. Bacon Butter and Jelly: For our second sandwich we decided to do a straight substitution of bacon butter for peanut butter. Not only is bacon butter a much more efficient way than bacon strips to get the maximum amount of bacon into a sandwich, this sandwich uses a reduced number of ingredients from the previous sandwich making it much more likely for people to make. The directions for this one are simple, and should be familiar to anyone capable of making peanut butter and jelly. 1) Spread jelly on one piece of bread (we decided to use toast). 2) Spread bacon butter on the other piece of bread. 3) Sandwich the bread together. 4) Eat. The salty-sweet confusion was much less prevalent in this sandwich than in the peanut butter, bacon, and jelly sandwich. And as far as texture and ease of eating it was just as easy to eat as the more mundane PB&J sandwich. Bacon Butter and Jelly on toast | |||
